20 / Emeli Sande – Breathing Under Water
This would have slotted into her debut album perfectly. Following on from the aggressive sound of ‘Hurts’ this is a gorgeous ballad and the strongest track from her latest album ‘Long Live The Angels’.
19 / Adele – Send My Love (To Your New Lover)
How do you follow up two behemoth tracks like ‘Hello’ & ‘When We Were Young’? You release this f*cker.
18 / Zayn – Pillow Talk
At one point this was the best song you’d heard in 2016. Then other songs came out and it wasn’t anymore. It’s the best solo effort by a One Directioner, you can’t deny that.
17 / Little Mix – Shout Out to My Ex
Not the most original, sonically challenging track to come from the Little Mix sirens, but it’s outrageously catchy. Some may say disgustingly so. It’s from Glory Days which has some pretty epic 80s inspired moments stuffed in it.
16 / Rihanna & Drake – Work
At first this was a song I loathed with every ounce of my being. Now it’s the song I have no shame for loving. That Brits performance won me over.
15 / Sia & Kendrick Lamar – The Greatest
I love Sia. However, she needed to change the pace a bit in 2016 and this venture with Kendrick Lamar did just that. Repetition at its best.
14 / Olly Murs – You Don’t Know Love
The best song of his career. Fact.
13 / DNCE – Cake By The Ocean
Hated it. Love it.
12 / Clean Bandit & Louisa Johnson – Tears
Not as good as ‘Rather Be’ but nothing is or will ever be.
11 / Fifth Harmony – Work From Home
When I work from home I don’t look like this. I must be doing something wrong. The song… epic.
10 / Zara Larsson – Lush Life
She popped up out of Swedish nowhere (where Santa’s from right?) and released this solid-as-a-rock debut single. It gets better with age too. Now, where’s Robyn?
09 / Christine & The Queens – Tilted
She poses challenges to gender norms and is actually an intelligent artiste. Doesn’t matter if the song is this good though.
08 / Rihanna – Kiss It Better
The 2nd appearance by Ri on this countdown. Her Anti album turned out to be one of her best but not Rated R (her peak). ‘Kiss It Better’ is the best song she’s released since ‘Diamonds’.
07 / Gallant – Weight In Gold (Louis Futon Remix)
This Gallant is a talented fellow and this remix of his stunning ‘Weight In Gold’ is an example of a remix done right. Enhance.
06 / Sia – Cheap Thrills
I don’t like Sean Paul features. Sia, you let me down. Your song is great though.
05 / Dua Lipa – Hotter Than Hell
Better than the other song she has out that people stupidly thing is better than this. Pfft. This is the definitive Dua Lipa experience.
04 / Flume & Kai – Never Be Like You
So gorgeous to listen to it might tap into those long forgotten things called emotions you have stuffed down in your pants.
03 / KDA & Tinashé – Just Say
It’s about time Tinashé got some recognition. She featured on a Britney song and it was great but this is how Tinashé should sound.
02 / Ariana Grande – Into You
The song I love about a d*ck bike is a lot of fun, but this was Ariana’s prime moment of 2016.
01 / Gallant – Bourbon
I defy you to find a more beautiful song in 2016. This is horribly under appreciated as is Gallant in general.
If you’re so inclined and already have Spotify, you may save the playlist equivalent of this countdown. You could kick back in the evening and listen to it and remember 2016 for the murderous b*tch she is/was.
